August 2026 sees historic cargo throughput at the Port of Gdańsk
The Port of Gdańsk continues to maintain strong growth in cargo throughput. From January to the end of August, 57.7 million tonnes of cargo were handled, which is 10% more than in the same period last year. In August 2026, the port reached a historic record. The monthly throughput exceeded 8 million tonnes for the first time. This result is primarily attributable to the handling of general cargo and liquid fuels.
The record achieved confirms the Port of Gdańsk’s strong performance. Since the beginning of 2026, the port has consistently improved its results. After reaching 7.9 million tonnes in July this year, the port reached just over 8 million tonnes in August.
Strong growth and stable levels
Exceeding 8 million tonnes of throughput in August represents a 13.3% year-on-year increase. General cargo throughput increased by as much as 21%, representing nearly 470,000 tonnes more than in August last year. The tonnage of containers handled increased by 15%, while the number of TEUs handled rose by 16%. Liquid fuels increased by 5%, reaching 3.9 million tonnes and accounting for almost half of the total volume of goods handled at the Port of Gdańsk in August. The largest percentage increase, however, was recorded in ore handling – by as much as 311%. Grain volumes, meanwhile, increased by 90%.
The only cargo group to record a decline (-12%) was other bulk cargo.
The Port of Gdańsk is on track for another record
The Port of Gdańsk’s strong growth in cargo throughput is reflected in the figures for the first eight months of the year. During this period, 57.7 million tonnes of cargo were handled, which means that the port continues to strengthen its position as one of the most important cargo handling, transport, and logistics hubs in the Baltic Sea region.
Liquid fuels remain the largest cargo category. Since the beginning of the year, handling volumes of liquid fuels have remained at a stable level and, after eight months, amount to approximately 26 million tonnes. General cargo ranks second, with 20.8 million tonnes.
If the current upward trend in cargo throughput continues, 2026 could bring the Port of Gdańsk a significantly better cargo throughput result than the previous year.
