‘Sea of Solidarity’: Port of Gdańsk and Gdańsk Foundation help the port of Odessa

In recent days, the port of Odessa has once again been the target of a brutal attack. Russian ballistic missiles struck the port’s civilian infrastructure, killing three employees and injuring five others. The engine room, administrative buildings and other port equipment were destroyed. This tragic event highlights the urgent and ongoing need to support our Ukrainian partners who risk their lives every day to keep their critical infrastructure running.

The Port of Gdańsk has started a support initiative, ‘Sea of Solidarity’, for the port of Odessa. The goal of this initiative is to unite port companies from Gdańsk and Odessa around the idea of jointly helping the attacked ports of Ukraine and, in the future, to rebuild Ukraine, create new trade corridors and strengthen the business ties between our countries.

One of the first activities carried out as part of the ‘Sea of Solidarity’ initiative is a fundraiser for the Port Fire Brigade in Odessa. Ukrainian firefighters fight every day to keep their infrastructure safe, often using worn-out equipment and suffering huge losses. The collected money will be used to purchase a fully equipped fire engine worth PLN 120,000 to allow a quick and effective response to fire threats and other emergency situations.

The Port of Gdańsk has asked its business partners to join the ‘Sea of Solidarity’ campaign and support the reconstruction of the port in Odessa. It has donated PLN 20,000 for this purpose, thus setting an example of solidarity and commitment.

‘We believe that we can quickly raise the remaining amount together. The Port of Gdańsk team has repeatedly shown that it is ready to help’, said Alan Aleksandrowicz, Vice-President of the Port of Gdańsk. ’Today, more than ever, we must show that solidarity knows no borders. Together, we can help Ukraine survive this difficult time and build a future based on partnership, stability and trust’.
