Mining Basin in the Port of Gdańsk to gain a modern port infrastructure

New quays, increased load-bearing capacity and improved navigational parameters – Poland’s largest seaport is entering another stage of development. On 20 February 2026, the Port of Gdańsk Authority S.A. concluded an agreement with PORR S.A., valued at PLN 114.6 million net, for the implementation of an investment project designed to significantly enhance the cargo handling capacity in the Inner Port.
The redevelopment of the Coal Quay – Stage II and the Administrative Quay in the Mining Basin is an investment that continues the ongoing works related to the expansion of the Coal Quay and the Ore Quay. Its objective is to increase the operational capacity of the Port of Gdańsk in terms of cargo handling.
“This is another stage in the systematic modernisation of the Port of Gdańsk’s infrastructure, which translates into increased safety and the port’s adaptation to the requirements of the modern market. By implementing this project, we are modernising and developing the bulk cargo handling hub in response to the growing needs of domestic and international trading partners,” says Dorota Pyć, CEO of the Port of Gdańsk Authority.
Objectives and effects of the project
The main objective of the investment is to increase cargo handling capacity and improve the technical parameters of the quays. Upon completion of the works, the load-bearing capacity of the quays will have been increased. Their current permissible load is 10 and 20 kN/m², which will be increased to 40 kN/m² by the redevelopment. This will enable the handling of heavier equipment and the storage of cargoes with greater mass. In addition, the Coal Quay will be adapted for cargo handling operations using modern mobile equipment, such as the LHM 550 and Mantsinen 300 – however, at present, due to the lack of a suitable surface, this is not possible
“As part of the investment, the technical depth of the quays is to be increased to -12 m, which will significantly improve the navigational parameters and enable the safe handling of larger vessels. As a result, the infrastructure will be fully adapted to accommodate ships with a maximum draught of up to -10.60 m and a tonnage of up to 100,000 DWT. This represents a substantial expansion of the port’s operational capabilities, increased flexibility in scheduling calls, and strengthening the position of the Port of Gdańsk as a modern and competitive cargo handling hub in the Baltic Sea,” said Stefan Rudnik, Director of the Investment Department at the Port of Gdańsk Authority S.A.
Although the investment project is being implemented under a ‘design and build’ formula, which assumes that the contractor obtains the building permit before the physical works commence, the environmental decision has already been obtained by the Port of Gdańsk Authority to accelerate the design process and the acquisition of administrative approvals.
Scope of the investment
As part of the design and construction works, a modern port infrastructure will be developed, encompassing both the quays and their technical, road and rail facilities. The extensive scope of works will ensure full integration of the new infrastructure with the existing transport and logistics system of the port.
A key element of the investment is the expansion of the Coal Quay over a stretch of approximately 335 m, together with comprehensive development of the technical yard, which together will ensure full operational and logistical functionality. At the same time, the Administrative Quay will be redeveloped over a length of approximately 121 m. It will be equipped with a state-of-the-art ramp for ro-ro vessels, enabling efficient handling of rolling cargo and increasing the operational flexibility of the port.
An integral part of the project is the expansion and redevelopment of the rail infrastructure, covering tracks 301, 302, 303 and 344, together with sets of points, which will significantly improve transport and the connection of the quays with the national railway network. The project also provides for the construction and modernisation of the road infrastructure, ensuring efficient road transport services and smooth vehicle movement within the investment area.
The entire area will be equipped with a comprehensive lighting system covering the Coal Quay, the Administrative Quay and the railway siding, with 24 lighting masts being installed for this purpose. In addition, two transformer stations will be constructed, along with modern power networks and installations, ensuring reliable electricity supply to the port infrastructure. The investment will also include telecommunication networks and installations supporting the management and safety of port operations.
The project also includes the construction of a water supply network and stormwater drainage equipped with a pre-treatment system, ensuring proper management of rainwater and compliance with high environmental standards. The entire investment will result in a coherent, modern infrastructure complex, significantly enhancing the operational and technical capabilities of the Port of Gdańsk.
Completion of the investment is planned for autumn 2029.
