Discussions at the Port of Gdańsk on fishing as an important link in the blue economy

The Port of Gdańsk hosted an important visit by representatives of European and national institutions responsible for fisheries policy. The guests of the port and Coldstore Gdańsk were EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis and Deputy Minister of Agriculture for Fisheries Jacek Czerniak. The visit was an excellent opportunity to discuss key topics such as food security, frozen fish supply chains and port logistics.
On the second day of his visit to Poland, Commissioner Kadis and the delegation accompanying him visited Coldstore Gdańsk, where the strategic importance of the cold chain in ensuring stable food supplies to European Union countries was emphasised.
The guests visited the cold store – the cargo handling base of the Deep Sea Fishing Port of Gdańsk, which houses Poland’s only Border Veterinary Control Point for non-containerised sea fishing products from non-EU countries. Maciej Kisiel, President of Coldstore, talked about the daily work associated with handling cargo from sea fishing and aquaculture.
The visit culminated in a cruise around the Port of Gdańsk, during which Alan Aleksandrowicz, Vice-President for Security and Finance, spoke about the port’s development, challenges and plans for the future.
The Port of Gdańsk is not only about modern infrastructure – it is part of a larger whole, namely the blue economy programme, i.e. socio-economic development in tune with the resources of the seas and oceans. The port plays a key role in ensuring food security for Poland and Europe. It is here that storage and preparation of raw material for processing takes place, together with administrative and veterinary controls to ensure that products from illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing do not enter the market.
The Port of Gdańsk, as a centre for deep-sea fishing, continues to strengthen its position in the European food security system, serving as an important link in the supply chain and a pillar of maritime economic development.
