In 2003, the Port of Gdansk Authority SA commissioned the "Study on the Air Protection for the Port in Gdansk", which covered the land owned by PGA SA and all business partners leasing land from PGA SA, whose activity causes pollution emissions to the air. On the basis of the submitted documentation, the Pomeranian Governor granted the permission for releasing gases and dusts to the air.

On the basis of the conducted analysis of the burden caused by emission sources in the port area, it was determined that no excessive concentration of suspended dusts occurs at the boundaries of individual terminals and port operating companies and at the boundaries of PGA SA.

Comprehensive inspections conducted in the subsequent years in PGA SA and in companies performing their business operations on the port land failed to detect any irregularities in terms of emissions to the air.

In 1996-2006, PGA SA carried out the modernisation of the heating system, which involved the closing-down of the central boiler plant fired by coal dust, the construction of nine new local high efficiency gas and oil boiler houses and a heat pump, and the provision of thermal insulation of several buildings.

The modernisation was a significant advancement on the environment as it greatly reduced the volume of pollutants emitted to the air. Equivalent gas and dust emission was decreased by 98.9%. The target reduction in emissions of pollutants to the air presents as follows: sulphur dioxide by 65.7 tonnes per year, nitrogen dioxide by 6.2 tonnes per year, carbon oxide by 230.9 tonnes per year, dust by 82.2 tonnes per year, carbon dioxide by 8,111 tonnes per year. At the same time, emissions were eliminated of benzoapiren in the amount of 0.072 tonnes per year and of soot in the amount of 3.8 tonnes per year, as well as disorganized emission from coal dust and burnt waste stockpiles (elimination of solid waste generated by burning coal dust).
