Harbour master may exempt a ship or a certain port area from obligation of using tug boats or may allow for fewer number of tugs, provided that his considerations of ship's manoeuvring properties (ex. thruster or facility of similar function) ensure that such exemption will not endanger safety of navigation in the port area. If necessary for the safety of navigation, harbour master may order to use a tug boat or more tug boats.

Ships of 70 m and more in length, carrying dangerous cargo shall be obliged to use tug service:

  • while entering the port - from the road to mooring position at the port
  • while leaving the port - from unmooring position to the road
  • at every change of berth within the port area with the exception for shifting along the quay

Harbour master determines the number of tugs which shall be used for each towing operation.

Ships of length of 70 m and more carrying Class 1 cargo according to IMDG Code and any oil derivative cargo or liquefied gas in bulk, shall be obliged to use the assistance of not less than one tug boat at the fairways and inner port waters.

In the Port of Gdańsk ships shall be obliged to use the assistance of tugs as follows:

in the inner port

one tug:

  • ships of length from 85 m  to 120 m inclusive or with draught of more than 6 m
  • ships of length of 70 m or more or of draught of more than 5 m provided that they proceed within the part of port including Leniwka River from Hak Polski to Siennicki Most
  • ships of length of 70 m or more proceeding to Ostrawica IV Basin
  • ships of length of 65 m or more or of draught of more than 3,5 m if they proceed in the area of Stara Motlawa to the bridge at Zielona Brama
  • tankers of length from 70 m to 100 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk or not gas free after carrying such cargo
  • ships entering or leaving Wladyslawa IV Basin shall use tug assistance enlarged by one tug boat

two tug boats:

  • ships of length from 120 m to 160 m inclusive
  • tankers of length from 100 m to 140 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk, or not gas free after carrying such cargo

three tug boats:

  • ships of length of 160 m to 200 m
  • tankers of length from 140 m to 180 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk, or not gas free after carrying such cargo

four tug boats:

  • ships of length from 200 m to 225 m
  • tankers of length of more than 180 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk, or not gas free after carrying such cargo

in the Northern Port

one tug boat:

  • ships of length from 90 m to 130 m
  • tankers of length from 70 m to 110 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk, or not gas free after carrying such cargo
  • ships of smaller length or draught on request of Harbour Master's Office

two tug boats:

  • ships of length from 130 m to 180 m
  • tankers of length from 110 m to 160 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk, or not gas free after carrying such cargo

three tug boats:

  • ships of length from 180 m to 240 m
  • tankers of length from 160 m to 220 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk, or not gas free after carrying such cargo

four tug boats:

  • ships of length from 240 m to 300 m
  • tankers of length from 220 m to 300 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk, or not gas free after carrying such cargo

Ships without propulsion shall be obliged to use the assistance of tugs as follows:

in the inner port

one tug - ships of length of 50 m (inclusive)

two tugs - ships of length of over 50 m to 120 m (inclusive)

three tug boats:

  • ships of length from 120 m to 160 m inclusive
  • tankers of length from 100 m to 140 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk, or not gas free after carrying such cargo

four tug boats:

  • ships of length of 160 m to 200 m
  • tankers of length from 140 m to 180 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk, or not gas free after carrying such cargo

five tug boats:

  • ships of length from 200 m to 225 m
  • tankers of length of more than 180 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk, or not gas free after carrying such cargo

in the Northern Port

one tug - ships of length of up to 50 m (inclusive)

two tugs - ships of length of over 50 m up to 130 m inclusive

three tug boats:

  • ships of length from 130 m to 180 m
  • tankers of length from 110 m to 160 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk, or not gas free after carrying such cargo

four tug boats:

  • ships of length from 180 m to 240 m
  • tankers of length from 160 m to 220 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk, or not gas free after carrying such cargo

five tug boats:

  • ships of length from 240 m to 300 m
  • tankers of length from 220 m to 300 m carrying oil derivative goods, chemicals or liquefied gas in bulk, or not gas free after carrying such cargo

Ships which for the safe entering / leaving  the port should be towed at the fairways due to their size, may enter / leave the port only when the sea state allows for service of tugs on tow.
