The number of modernised warehouses and buildings at the Port of Gdansk is increasing
Thanks to the project involving thorough modernisation of the administration building on the Oliwskie Quay completed a few weeks ago, the quay gained a modern space intended for offices for the port's stakeholders.
The investment, worth PLN 861,000, constitutes one of the elements of the so-called thermal modernisation programme at the Port of Gdansk, aimed at improving the condition of buildings, primarily warehouse and administration buildings, and increasing the energy efficiency standards of these facilities. In many cases, this also involves thorough modernisation of the central heating and hot water utility systems, making it possible to switch to low-emission heating.
The investment at the Oliwskie Quay included thermal insulation of buildings, provision of a new external elevation, window and door replacement, conversion and refurbishment of some of the rooms, and provision of sanitary, electrical and telecommunications systems. The connections and a section of the sanitary sewer system were replaced and a smoke exhaust system was added.
The building houses office space with a total floor area of 590 m2 situated on two storeys and directly adjacent to the warehouse located in the first line of the Oliwskie Quay.
Several months ago, another investment, worth over PLN 0.5 million, was completed nearby, within the Duty Free Zone. It covered more than 1,000 m2 of floor surface of warehouse L.
The scope of work included thorough thermal modernisation of the warehouse, repair of the existing stormwater drainage system and construction of a new one and provision of a telecommunications link, as well as repair of the existing electrical systems as part of the thermal modernisation work, and repair of the lightning protection system. Thus, the warehouse not only gained a new appearance thanks to a new elevation, but was above all secured against heat loss, which significantly improved the energy efficiency of the warehouse. The main aim of the investment was to limit the consumption of energy and the costs of using the building for the benefit of current and potential future users of the warehouse.
The modernisation work begun last year and continued this year is the effect of the Port of Gdansk Authority SA's new area management policy. The port is focusing its efforts on changing the quality of its infrastructure, not just the access and quay infrastructure, but also the warehouse facilities. This is why demolition work is being carried out in the areas administered by the port and heavy, inefficient old warehouses are being successively eliminated from the landscape. The new areas gained this way are partly intended for storage yards or for the planned construction of new warehouse infrastructure. In other cases, warehouse facilities whose use and whose modernisation is economically justified, are being refurbished.
In 2016, the port expended a total of PLN 4.5 million for the programme of thermal modernisation and internal conversion of buildings. This year, this amount will be higher and is estimated at nearly PLN 22 million.
