Opening of the new road bridge, part of the Sucharski route

19.07.2002

Good transportation connections with the Northern Port and other investments in this region, such as Westerplatte Ferry Terminal with the Warsaw Route by-passing the city centre, are among the most important goals of Port of Gdansk Authority SA. Reaching this goal is possible owing to the implementation of the three undertakings: the suspension bridge over the Martwa Wisla, the tunnel under the port channel and the road bridge in the course of the Sucharski Route.

The suspension bridge has been serving the Port and its contracting parties for some time now, while on Friday, 19 July 2002, at 11 a.m. the new road bridge, part of the Sucharski Route (near the intersection with Ku Ujsciu Street), was officially opened. Among the ceremony's participants there were the representatives of the contractors, the authorities of the City of Gdansk, and the members of the Board of Port of Gdansk Authority SA. The bridge was opened by the Mayor of Gdansk, Pawel Adamowicz, together with the President of the Board of Port of Gdansk Authority SA, Marian Switek.

Mr. Adamowicz in his speech thanked the President of the Board of the Port for co-financing the investment by the Port. He emphasised that owing to this it was possible to finish the construction in time, which is especially important taking into consideration new ferry connections from Westerplatte Terminal to Copenhagen and Trelleborg. President Switek mentioned other new projects such as the tunnel under the Martwa Wisla and Deepsea Container Terminal.

The new investment prepared for over a year has replaced the old bridge unsuitable for the Port's needs. The new road bridge is 134,5 metres long (the old one was 94 metres long), the length of its longest span is 70 metres and, what is most important, its bearing capacity is 50 tonnes, while previously it was only 20 tonnes. In the course of works the sewage system has been replaced and the lighting system installed. The intersection of Ku Ujsciu Street and Sucharski Street has been also modernised (about 1 km in total). The cost of the construction of the new road bridge amounted to 11,3 million PLN. 8,7 million PLN came from the budget of the city, the remaining part was contributed by Port of Gdansk Authority SA "The Port Ring Road" will be completed when the tunnel under the port channel is opened.
