Development Projects

The strategy adopted by the Port of Gdansk Authority SA aims to take maximum advantage of the port's geographical and economic location in order to ensure its sustainable and rational growth as a universal port offering value added services. Our major strength is the capacity for developing deep-water cargo handling facilities providing services to the biggest vessels that can enter the Baltic Sea.

There is a possibility of widening the deep-water part of the port through the construction of new quays on land reclaimed from the sea.

Another advantage is the central location of the port on the southern coastline of the Baltic Sea. The above-mentioned factors coupled by the economic potential of the port's hinterland and the Baltic Region are conducive to the development of distribution activities. One of our strategic goals, therefore, is to gain the rank of a distribution port and a Baltic container hub.

The port's full potential was duly recognized as the Trans-European Transport Corridor No. 6 was delineated to provide a connection between the Nordic countries and Southern Europe, with the Gdansk port ranking among its major links.

Our development plans build on opportunities created by the port's up-to-date capacity. Its significant role is to guarantee national power supply safety. Growth in this potential represents a key element in the port's strategy. Our immediate scope of action in this regard includes the construction of storage facilities for liquid fuels and oil derivatives in the deep-water part of the port as well as the expansion of dry-bulk handling facilities in the Northern Port. These facilities will in future provide distribution services in the area of the Baltic Sea. Both projects will be implemented with external capital.

The most dynamic growth observed in seaports all over the world involves container turnovers. This trend has also affected the Gdansk port. The existing potential of its two container terminals (i.e. Gdansk Container Terminal in the Inner Port and Deepwater Container Terminal Gdansk) currently ensures the throughput capacity of 600,000 TEU's and will be further expanded over the coming years. The expansion potential at DCT Gdansk is estimated to reach up to 2 million TEU's.

Further growth in container throughput capacity is also possible in this part of the port. The arrival of signifi cant volumes of containerized cargo will boost the development of the Pomeranian Distribution and Logistics Centre planned by the City of Gdansk. We also intend to designate land adjacent to DCT and to the Centre for the development of port services related to general cargo handling. These plans will take substantial shape on the basis of cooperation with external investors.

Further expansion of the port will be largely benefited by the completion of the Sucharski Route, including a tunnel under the port canal of the Dead Vistula river, and the construction of a new railway bridge, part of the railway track from the Northern Port to the main railway line connecting Gdansk with the south of Poland. Both projects have been short listed under the European support framework Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment.

The completion of the Sucharski Route involves partial redevelopment of the inner transportation system, especially access roads to the key operational area of the Górniczy Basin. A relevant project partnered by the City of Gdansk has been placed on a reserve list under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment.

We are also planning the modernisation and growth of the capacity available in the Inner Port. A tool to achieve this goal will be the privatisation of the port's biggest operating company, Port of Gdansk Cargo Logistics Ltd. Specifi c development plans in this respect will be coordinated with investors interested in acquiring our shares in the Company.
